But if you want a dedicated workhorse, the Croix de Fer or Equilibrium will probably suit you better. Not quite mainstream, yet still hugely popular, Genesis Bikes are a British brand loved by steel-aficionados and adventurers alike. If you’re in the market for a bike, the lines of bikes Genesis carries offers something for everyone, no matter your level, size, or age. The sales crew is always there with a smile to fit each customer and offer test rides in the parking lot – with a helmet fitting too, of course. Modern 27.5″ with hard packed tires rolls over everything. Light alloy frame with 24 speeds, and mech disc brakes. The Fugio is a rowdier bike than the Croix de Fer, more suited to playing around on the trails and using the bumps as a platform to get some air. The dropper seatpost, slacker head angle, shorter chainstays and clearance for tyres up to 50mm wide on 650b wheels are responsible for this more playful handling. Essentially an aluminium version of the Croix de Fer, the CDA features a similar plethora of mounts and wide clearances but comes in at a significantly lower price.
But these won’t present an impediment to getting out and using the frame for the huge variety of applications it has the capability for. Gravel riding, endurance road riding, cycle-touring, commuting, these are all still possible on this bike – it’s just a more accessible platform to get started with. Specialising in gravel, road, touring and mountain bikes made from steel, titanium and aluminium, these are bikes that encourage you to explore the paths and trails less travelled. So many models are offered that it can be hard to choose exactly which bike is best for you.
The wheelset is lightweight with an internal rim width of 19mm that will take good sized rubber which means you could add some float to the ride with some high volume tyres. The Core 26.4 came fitted with 2.2 Mountain Kings, the originals not the much improved Mountain King II. The Tour de Fer is a steel touring-specific bike with a longer, stable wheelbase, and comes complete with mudguards and racks. The Genesis Tarn is a steel-framed short-travel genesis bike hardtail with 120mm travel and 27.5in wheels, and is equipped with Maxxis Rekon tyres. Since then, Genesis has gone from strength to strength, producing some of the UK’s best loved bikes for all occasions, and has been the bike supplier and title sponsor of the Madison Genesis road racing team since 2013. As with the Day One, there are mudguards, rear pannier rack, and an internally geared rear hub for all weather dependability.
Definitely not a versatile bike; this is designed with only CX racing in mind and makes no compromises – except for, perhaps, its two sets of bottle bosses. As the name suggests, these are genesis bicycles bikes that are designed for the explicit purpose of riding on the road. Some are more race oriented, meaning mudguard and pannier mounts are forgone and the geometry is longer and lower.
The maximum tyre size on bike is 28c, typical for rim brake set ups but relatively narrow for a bike with discs. But for races that are solely on roads, this should be more than adequate. British brand Genesis has become a brand synonymous with versatility for us here at Wheelbase. Genesis champion themselves on built in practicalities that can be seen throughout the range, enabling their use daily across many different scenarios. The Genesis Datum is another versatile bike that could serve as a gravel-cruncher or mile-muncher, depending on the tyres you choose to run.
Genesis produces bikes for all cycling disciplines, including road, mountain, cyclocross, gravel/adventure and commuting. About three years ago, they brought in e-bikes, which added a new avenue of bicycle access for someone who might need a pedal assist from an electric motor. The service manager, Jimmy Madden, says it has been wonderful to learn about e-bikes since it gets even more family members out on the trail who might otherwise stay home. Genesis also features a wide array of parts, accessories, and apparel.
